SUMMARY:Autumn Nature/Historic/Color Hike
DESCRIPTION:(local/3-hour hike) \nOctober 20th (Tuesday; 2:30 PM-5:30 PM) – Highland State Recreation Area\, White Lake Township\, MI (park pass/fee may be required) \nWe will meet at the front entrance gate parking lot at 2:30 PM. History buffs will appreciate the remnants of the Ford family estate\, once a private retreat for the renowned industrialist Edsel Ford. \nThis massive 5\,900-acre park lies within Oakland County and contains 10-plus inland lakes. With rolling hills\, this park is a gem for a wide variety of plant and animal life. At this time of year\, the fall colors can be striking with its rich tapestry of mature hardwood forests. SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Migration
DESCRIPTION:(45-minute drive/2-hour viewing) \nNovember 7 th (Saturday; 4:00 PM-6:00 PM) – Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\, Grass Lake\, MI (no park pass/fee required) \nWe will meet at the Sanctuary parking lot at 4:00 PM. This is Michigan Audubon’s largest bird sanctuary\, located in Jackson County. Each Fall hundreds of Sandhill Cranes congregate in the evening during migration\, flying overhead in “V” formation. As we await their arrival\, Steve Jerrant\, Sanctuary Steward will give a brief talk on the Sanctuary and lead a short walk (1 mile or less). \nBinoculars and Spotting scope are essential. DESCRIPTION:(local/2-hour excursion)\nNovember 14 th (Saturday; 9:00 AM-11:00 AM) – Kensington Metropark\, Milford\, MI (park pass/fee required) \nWe will meet within the park at the West Boat Launch parking lot (just south of the park Nature\nCenter\, far west side of park\, across the road from Wild Wing Lake) at 9:00 AM (arrive early for coffee and donuts). Pat Baize will lead our group to staging locations for viewing migrating ducks at this popular stopover location. You would be surprised at what can come through this waterfowl hotspot (especially without duck hunters)! Binoculars and spotting scopes are essential.
