SUMMARY:Fall Nature Guided Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:(local/2-hour walk) \nOctober 1st (8:30 AM-10:30 AM) – Independence Lake County Park\, Whitmore Lake\, MI (park pass/fee may be required) \nWe will meet at the Beach Center Pavilion at the far end of the park at 8:30 AM (arrive early for coffee and donuts). Faye Stoner\, Washtenaw County Park Naturalist will guide us on a tranquil interactive experience with the local flora and birds and the changing seasonal colors. Distance will include .83 miles or up to 3 miles with options for participants to end early. And with their nocturnal habits and impeccable camouflage it can be hard to spot members from this fascinating group of birds out in the wild. \nUsing pictures and videos\, this program offers an inside look at the life of owls. With over 200 species of owls in the world\, this program will also look at which owl species live here in Michigan\, what they’re doing this time of year\, as well as what you can potentially do in your yard to help them. \nAbout the Presenter \nLaurel Zoet has worked as a naturalist and educator for over 20 years. Her resume includes time working for the Michigan DNR\, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks\, West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation\, and non-profit nature centers. In 2013 she started her own freelance nature education business called Nature on the GO! LLC and traveled throughout the state of Michigan teaching about Michigan wildlife and ecology at schools\, libraries\, day camps\, and senior living facilities. From 2016 to 2026\, Laurel and her husband Mitch opened and operated the Wild Birds Unlimited nature shop in Brighton\, MI. \nDuring that time\, they connected people to nature through the hobby of backyard bird feeding. Laurel also regularly taught in-store nature education programs while also offering community outreach programs to local garden clubs\, churches\, libraries\, Audubon groups\, and schools within Livingston County. \nToday\, Laurel serves as the President for the non-profit Friends of Island Lake State Recreation Area and as the Vice President for the newly formed non-profit Livingston Audubon Naturalists. \nSign up here: https://forms.gle/xWj5DBnpTTyGnMQu5

SUMMARY:Autumn Nature/Historic/Color Hike
DESCRIPTION:(local/3-hour hike) \nOctober 20th (Tuesday; 2:30 PM-5:30 PM) – Highland State Recreation Area\, White Lake Township\, MI (park pass/fee may be required) \nWe will meet at the front entrance gate parking lot at 2:30 PM. History buffs will appreciate the remnants of the Ford family estate\, once a private retreat for the renowned industrialist Edsel Ford. \nThis massive 5\,900-acre park lies within Oakland County and contains 10-plus inland lakes. With rolling hills\, this park is a gem for a wide variety of plant and animal life. At this time of year\, the fall colors can be striking with its rich tapestry of mature hardwood forests.
